So you just moved to New York and you have some bare windows in your new home that you need to take care of. There are several things to keep in mind when deciding on the best window treatments for your home. You will obviously need to look at the style of your other home furnishings and see what works best with the style you are going for. Apart from this, however, there are a lot of other things you need to bear in mind when selecting window treatments.
The first thing that should be taken into consideration is the type of room you are planning to put the window treatments in. This will determine the type of light and level of privacy you want in the room. You may want your bedroom to have a very small amount of light or a lot of natural light depending on what makes you feel more comfortable. If your bedroom window faces a private backyard, privacy may not be as big of an issue, but if it faces the street you may want to go with a shade or drape that is completely opaque. Either way, knowing how much lighting and privacy you want in each room will help you to narrow down your options.
The style, material and color are other important factors when choosing window treatments. They can be found in a plethora of styles ranging from casual to contemporary to traditional. Similarly, blinds, shades and draperies are available in numerous types of fabrics and materials and you typically will have a wide range of colors to choose from as well. Again, take your home décor into consideration. You may want your window treatments in your living room to be the same material and style as the furniture to give it a uniform look. For color, you may want to go with tones that accent the rest of the décor or just match colors for consistency.
Finally, take into account and unique needs in your home. If you have arched windows, you will probably have to get custom window treatments made as the ready-made store-bought kind will probably not adequately cover the window. If you have children in the house, you want to take safety into consideration. There have been quite a few accidental deaths by strangulation involving blind cords. To remedy this situation, you can motorize your blinds so they open and close with the push of a button.
Ultimately, the most ideal window treatments depend on your specific needs. As long as you keep the preceding guidelines in mind when you are shopping for your new window treatments, you’ll be able to find the type that is best for you and your home.
