Creating Bright, Airy Rooms In Your Home Is Affordable And Easy
July 10, 2010
Popular concerns among homeowners is the crowded feel of their rooms. If your home has a lot of rooms, chances are you will have less space in each room. Some people prefer the privacy of rooms separated instead of open floor plans. If your kids need a space to study, or if you and your spouse want separate areas, it is a good idea to give everyone their own space. These smaller spaces tend to feel crowded, especially if you need storage or furnishings in them. There are ways to make the spaces feel open, and many of these tricks are easy and affordable. Instead of having industrial, cold hospital lighting opt for cloud light panels or dimming switches to create warmth or cooling effects in the room.
Another way to open up a space is with the color of the paint. Many people believe that dark colors make a room feel small and lighter colors make it feel bigger. While this is generally the case, it is actually the warm or cool hue that affects the feel of the room. A warm honey color will give a sense of comfort. If you choose something in a peachier hue, while still in the same color family, it brightens and opens the area. It also depends on how sunlight is reflected in the room. Some shades absorb and others reflect. Those that reflect bring brightness into the room, making it feel larger and more open.
The furnishings in a room are a major factor in how much space you have. This may seem obvious, but there are plenty of people who fill their spaces with large furniture and do not understand why they feel cramped. If you have smaller rooms, you should choose small scale pieces. Often, you can find small scale furniture at second hand stores, garage sales, and thrift shops. Newer furniture is built for comfort and therefore, usually larger. However, you can choose refurbished pieces that fit nicely into smaller spaces. Many of these pieces are sturdier and create a unique style that is all our own, instead of being cookie cutter styles that are seen in most homes. Use your desire to lighten and brighten rooms as a way of creating a space that is all your own. The color of your walls, flooring, and furniture will have an effect on how your space feels. So will the window coverings and ability of sunlight to get into the room. If sunbeams can enter the space and cast a glow on the room for the better part of the day, you will be pleased with how the room feels.
