How To Minimise Central Heating Bills

June 4, 2010

With energy costs higher than they have ever been in recent history, it pays to find ways to reduce your central heating costs. With this in mind, the list below provides some essential tips for reducing those costs. No matter what changes you decide to make, just bear in mind that the small ones can have a large impact on the overall costs, so it is well worth considering all possible improvements outlined below.

1. The best way to start saving money is to find your boiler and check that the hot water thermostat isn’t turned up too high. In most cases it is recommended not to go below 120 degrees.

2. Since you’re already at your boiler adjusting the heat, it is a good idea to check that the filters are clean too. A dirty and clogged filter will force your unit to work much harder and stay on longer as it struggles to penetrate anything through the central heating system.

3. As well as noting the above, leaks can be a common problem in a home with central heating, so you may want to double check for anything untoward so you can mention it to your heating supplier. In fact, any leaks could be making your energy bills much higher than they need to be, and the worst part is that you’re not actually benefiting from getting any more heat for the costly price of your bills! Its fine if you don’t trust yourself to do this though, because the central heating experts can come over and sort it for you. Also, you can kindly ask the engineer to check the ducts whilst he is at your home, and this will help you to make sure you are being as energy efficient as possible.

4. Adjust your thermostat a few degrees lower. Believe me, this really adds up. It may not seem like much of a difference to you, but you will notice the difference when you get a lower bill each month!

5. If you suspect that your thermostat isn’t the most modern on the market, make sure you speak to someone about getting a new one which is programmable. A programmable thermostat is definitely the way forward and it allows homeowners to manage the overall temperature in the home, so energy is used efficiently. The great thing about this is that you can have a lovely warm house just before you arrive home, as the thermostat will only program heating and hot water as you want it to be. These programmable thermostats aren’t very expensive, and you can either install one yourself or call the trusty engineer out to save time.

Just by spending some time reading these tips and deciding to take notice could make all the difference to your central heating bills. The advice included here isn’t meant to take you days and days to implement- just reserve a few hours to get them done. Now is the time to get stuck in – or decide if you need to call the engineer out, just to lend a hand.
