• For the piano keys, never use alcohol or bleaches as cleaning fluids. These liquids are made of chemicals that can reduce the moisture present in the keys due to natural oils. Use the cleaners that are meant for pianos only.
• If you are using a damp fabric, you must only clean the tops of the keys. The purpose for this is the fact that keys are quite fragile from the interior. If exposed to moisture, the soft wood inside may decay and rot.
• Before you polish your piano, you must know whether it is polymer or lacquer finish. Either one of them can have adverse effects on the opposite. Thus, it is essential to know which one you own to refrain from damages.
• For the soundboard, you can use a vacuum cleaner to clean away the dust. When you do so, take care that you do not bump the piano strings. You must also not attempt to clean it using a cloth or a sharp object to wipe away the dust.
• Finally, you must tune the instrument at least once or twice a year. Proper tuning determines the acoustic quality. You must not attempt do it on your own unless you know it properly. Contact a professional or a tuner technician for this reason.
