Often times, what is known as South Florida is also known as the Gold Coast. The main cities in this Gold Coast area are Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. South Florida is all confined to a small strip of land located in between the Atlantic Ocean and the Everglades so it is not very big but is also the most populated part of the whole state of Florida. This article will explore some of these cities that are located in South Florida and some interesting things regarding them.
Miami is the 7th most populated metropolitan area in America which is surprising considering the small amount of land that the city itself sits on. A lot of businesses call Miami home, particularly the banking business giving it the greatest concentration of banks in the country. It is also known for its arts and global culture and is the main port for several cruise ships heading off to the Caribbean. Miami Beach is called the fashion capitol and many people say they have never seen more gorgeous people than in Miami Beach where it is full of fashion models.
Fort Lauderdale is another town in South Florida and is a popular tourist location for travelers. It is often referred to as the “Venice of America” because of the large canal system running through it. This city is unique that it distinctly designates various neighborhoods in it and has more than 60 neighborhoods that are part of an official program that recognizes places for doing that. From the 1940′s to the 1980′s it was a popular Spring Break destination for college kids but now attracts a more sophisticated and affluent kind of tourist. It gets a lot of business also from the cruise ships that stop in this location. A fun place to see when there is the Swap Shop which is the largest flea market in the country that also has the largest drive-in movie theatre in the country.
West Palm Beach is better known as West Palm by the locals that reside there. This city also has a great deal of tourism and is known to host some great festivals and events too. One great event is Sun Fest that started in 1982 and is a awesome concert of top musicians like John Mayer and Bob Dylan just to name a few. Another great event is the Palm Beach international Film Festival and over recent years has attracted more than 40,000 attendees. The last great event is the National Horse Show which is the oldest horse show and one of the most prestigious events to to go to in the equestrian world.
All of the cities on the Gold Coast have warm and sunny weather and should be visited at least once. Whether you want the Miami nightlife or a sunny boat ride off of Ft. Lauderdale, it is a wonderful destination.
