How to Keep the Temperature in Your House within Pleasant Boundaries in the Hot Months
May 2, 2010
In summer, does it happen to you that you have to visit your icebox several times every day? Is the temperature in your home so unbearably high that the only place you wish to be is Iceland? Millions of homeowners in Toronto and other places are affected by this scenario each summer. We are bringing you some tips on how to get ready for the next hot summer.
The easiest option: Air-conditioners
There are different steps that can be tried out to reduce the internal temperature of our houses. The most effective, but most costly, is the common air-conditioner. If this is your fancied option, then there are some practical tips to make sure you are getting the best value possible from your AC unit. First, it is important to measure the size of your home or apartment and according to that get the correct AC machine. If you have a common family home with two bedrooms, look for machines with around 5,000 btu – that should be sufficient. The ideal spot for the machine is a window on the nort-facing wall of the building. Like this, the machine itself will be kept cooler and will run more efficiently. Clean the internal filters at least once each month to prevent house dust from building up and having a negative effect on its operation. For cases when you are leaving your home for a period longer than an hour, it is better to switch the AC off and then when you return, switch it on again and re-cool the rooms.
Options for green-thinking customers
How to fight the heat problem if you don’t want to use these power-hungry appliances because of environmental reasons? Well, there are more ways to decrease the internal temperature without adding to global warming by excessive and unnecessary use of CO2 producing fossil fuels. First we will focus at the top of your home and then go downwards.
Roof
It is a well known fact that heat transfers more easily through some substances than others. For roofing materials, such as tiles or shingles, that is especially valid. If you wish to save on air-conditioning, think about using a good-quality insulation to your attic space. A 12-inch layer instead of a 3-inch might reduce the cooling costs by as much as 10 percent.
