A Lot of Insignificant Problems can Necessitate Bathroom Sink Repairs
March 21, 2010
Plumbing problems are always annoying, often because you just don’t know the way to fix them. There really isn’t that much that can go wrong with a sink, though, and generally the repairs are quite straightforward. All you need to do to get started fixing your problem is to take a careful glance at the workings of the sink attempting to find something that doesn’t look right. If you aren’t sure what to look for, you might take a look underneath one of your other sinks to see if you can find anything that looks different. Once you diagnose what the offender might be, it’s usually a straightforward matter to go to a plumbing supply store and pick up the parts you need to do the bathroom sink repairs.
Of course, if there is water running all over your bathroom, you need to take some aggressive measures first. Acquaint yourself with where the water shut-offs are in your home. There should be one under each sink and toilet as well as a main valve in your utility area. Any time you are getting water where you don’t desire it, the first thing you need to do is turn off the related water valve. Practice ahead so that you’ll know which way to turn the valve to turn it off. That way, if a toilet runs over or your sink is leaking, you’ll be able to stop the water flow quickly.
Water leaks are one of the most damaging things that can occur in your home, and you have to have the skills to stop them immediately. Turning the water off will do that, but don’t think that that in itself is going to stop the problem. In fact, if you turn the water back on before you repair the sink, it’s going to start dribbling again. If your sink is dribbling around the tap, all you may need is a new rubber o-ring. Take the old one along to the store so that you can match it. This is a quick and cheap fix!
It might be that the repairs your bathroom sink needs have nothing to do with a leak. Maybe the problem is as simple as the sink not draining properly. The quickest fix for this is to add some type of drain cleaning chemicals, for example Drano or Liquid Plumber, into the drain and see if that will remove the clog. If not, you may need assistance in removing parts of the pipes under the sink to find the clogged area.
