Fish Tank Cleaning
March 10, 2010
If you have an aquarium, you probably know how important the maintenance is for it. It is not that complicated, as it may seem from the first sight. If you tend to clean your aquarium regularly, you can even find it to be quite absorbing occupation.
The guarantee of your fish security and health is the clean water in your fish tank. You have to change the water regularly – once a week. You know that there is an accretion of harmful substances in your aquarium such as sphacelated particles of weeds and other plants growing in your aquarium and ammonia and nitrites escaping in course of fish activity, not to mention fish recrements. Don’t use cleaners and abrasive detergent you use to apply for your home cleaning. If you don’t wash them out properly from your fish tank, they can dramatically change the water composition and lead to the death of some species. Buy special fish tank cleaners intended for aquariums. Never add tap water to your fish tank even if you have no time to clean your fish tank properly. Do it later, but NEVER add tap water. It can lead to the temperature drop that can be dangerous and even fatal for you fish.
The process of fish tank cleaning should be intimidating for you. Divide the entire process into several stages that can be easily followed. To begin with, disconnect all electric devices you have in your fish tank, starting from aquarium heater and air pump (if it is not running on batteries). Secondly, take out all decorations. Put plants and decorations in a clean bucket. Make sure that this bucket is used only for aquarium cleaning because if you take a bucket you use for you home cleaning, polluted by detergents, you can seriously harm your fish. You don’t want your favorite species dying, right? Then, follow our recommendations.
Use special sponge to remove algae from your fish tank. You can buy a sponge in the nearest pet shop. Again, never use sponges or rag you use for home cleaning. If you cannot remove algae with the help of sponge, use razor, but be careful not to scratch the glass of your fish tank. It is not going to look good anymore if you damage it.
Take the bucket with all devices and decorations in it and clean them. You have to use tap water for this purpose and no detergents. If you cannot remove algae and particles, rub them with your finger or sponge.
After all these steps done, take a gravel cleaner and clean the gravel spot by spot until one third of the water is extracted.
Don’t let your fish back into a fish tank until you have a sufficient temperature. Don’t forget to put de-chlorinator in your water in case the water is chlorinated in your area.
After all these steps are followed, put all decorations, connect an air pump, heater and the aquarium cleaning is done!
