The Cost of Completely New Kitchen Cabinets vs. Refacing your Old Ones

March 1, 2010

Remodeling a kitchen can be the most expensive home improvement job in your house, especially if you’re planning on replacing your old cupboards with new ones. So perhaps it isn’t a total replacement that you really need. If your existing cabinets are still solid and well-made but look tacky and out-of-date, you may need to consider refacing them, which will make them look like new at a fraction of the cost. So exactly how much can you expect to pay it you install new cabinetry, and what will it cost you to reface your old cabinets?

You’ll have spent time admiring the stunning cabinets you see in a home improvement store or kitchen showroom. Have you ever taken the time to price them? In this price you’re speaking the removal of the old cupboards, the new cupboards, and installation fees. Too many folk look at the cost of the cupboards and don’t stop to consider the extras. For example, you can find pre-built stock cupboards to fit a 10′ x 12′ kitchen for as little as $4,000, but that does not include either the installation of the cupboards or the new countertops you will need.

If you decide to go with semi-custom cabinets which allow you to select from varied options prior to having your cupboards built, you’re going to finish up paying about double the amount you would pay for stock cabinets with $8,000 being about the minimum. If you add any extras to the basic styles, for example fancy trim, glass fronts, or exotic woods, the cost will escalate. And, oh yes, you don’t want to forget the installation and countertops for these cupboards, either.

Custom cabinets are the apex of the line, because they are built specifically for your home. They will be unique and beautiful, but they’re also going to end up costing you at least $16,000 for a 10′ x 12′ kitchen. The fancy hardwood construction, the more complicated the moldings, the additional features, such as plate racks, pantries, lift outs, installation, and counters, whether you select laminate, granite, or some other finish, are going to end up costing you even more.

The most straightforward and most cost-effective method of refacing cabinets is by painting them. This is a job you can do yourself in your spare time to save on labor charges. There are alternatives available, however, that may need professional installation unless you have the talents to do the job yourself. You can find that you will save you as much as fifty percent off of what you’d need to pay a professional by doing your own work. Additionally, refacing cabinets yourself can save you more than 75 percent off of what new cupboards would cost.

There are definitely many options to consider when you get prepared to remodel your kitchen. If your cabinets are falling apart, you will have to purchase new ones. However, if they are solid and only short of an update, you can get the look you desire for a ton less money with refacing.
