Before you buy any garden furniture it is strongly recommended that you do some research.Doing so will greatly increase your chances of buying garden furniture that is right for you and will last you a long time. The following guide will help you to choose the right furniture.
Firstly decide whether you want stackable or foldaway furniture that will be put away in the shed or garage in winter or if you want permanent solid garden furniture that remains in situ all year round. If you want your garden furniture to be a permanent part of your garden for aesthetic reasons then it is recommended that you go for heavy furniture made from hardwood, aluminium or wrought iron with rust proofing.Choose good, hardwearing materials, which will last for ages so save you money in the long run.
Choosing the right type of material and construction is paramount.Decide what kind of material for your garden furniture would best compliment your patio or garden.Aim for an even look to your garden once the furniture is added.
Wood is the firm favourite for garden furniture it has all the necessary attributes but it will need some maintainance.Teak, iroko and courbaril are all great for garden furniture as they have a high oil content. These are good as they can be left outside all year round.
Joints should be mortice and tenon, be wary if they are just metal bolts as these have the potential to corrode.Any fittings that are metal should be made from aluminium, brass or stainless steel so that they don’t rust when exposed to the elements.
Check that teak garden furniture has been made from premium grade teak, this will ensure that there are no cracks or defects in the wood.Additionally, Make sure your teak garden furniture is kiln dried to optimise moisture content and ensure shape is maintained and cracks are eliminated.
To ensure that the joints won’t fail in cold weather or rain, check that they have been glued with epoxy resin based glues.
Once weathered, your teak furniture will have a greyish/silver colour to it, if it does need a bit of a clean, scrub it with some warm soapy water.
If you do want to wash it down with a pressure hose, do so at 60-80 bar (psi 900 – 1200) but don’t get closer than 30cm from the surface.Add a small amount of bleach to the water once a year. This will stop algae growing on the surface.
Any stains and grease spots can be immediately removed by washing down using a light detergent then rinsing off with clean water as soon as they occur. However, this is not essential as nature will take its course over time.
You may notice hairline cracks in the surface when the weather is dry. This is natural and no action needs to be taken as when the moisture in the atmosphere increases the timber will return to its original condition.
Teak oil will enhance the natural finish of the wood, for best results apply it to new furniture. Please ensure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions as usually this is a three stage process. If the wood is wet, the teak oil will darken on contact so make sure it is fully dried out before you start.
