Using Granite Slabs In Home Decor

January 14, 2010

When you are thinking of renovating your bathroom or kitchen, you may not immediately think of using granite slabs. But if you stop and consider, it stands to reason that this material ought to be used more often in home design. Granite patterns and colors are varied and calmly beautiful, and the stone is strong and durable. This is why it’s being used more and more in the home, in recent years, for things like bathroom granite vanity tops and kitchen counters.

Granite slabs may not be as expensive as you fear, even though they generally aren’t cheap. If you look around at several home supply stores, you may find granite blocks that have chips in the surface or other flaws, which would likely mean a considerable markdown in price. The flaws might not even be visible once the granite countertop installation is complete. Another way of getting a good price is to ask a supplier when they’re changing from old to new inventory, because the old pieces will sell for much less under such circumstances.

Keep your decor or your renovation plans in mind as you look for these less expensive granite blocks and slabs, and you should be able to find some that will work well with your colors and design ideas. What makes this stone such a striking design element, in addition to the vaunted strength and durability, is that granite colors are never exactly the same from slab to slab. Each piece will add unique texture and richness to the look of your decor. This stone is a great addition to many areas of the home, such as with kitchen planning, as amazing sinks, back splashes and countertops are all possibilities that will look awesome with stainless steel appliances.

When you have chosen the granite slabs you want for the kitchen and bathroom, they will also need to be sized, polished and sealed, and you’ll need to arrange for them to be cut to fit the locations where they will be placed. The supplier will likely make delivery and installation arrangements, but if you do have to do this yourself, then exercise great care with these very heavy stones blocks. Additionally, when the stone is properly sealed, cleaning granite won’t be much different from cleaning counters made of other materials, though you’ll need to take heed of the manufacturer’s instructions. If you’ve chosen carefully, and follow the proper maintenance tips, your granite pieces should endure for as long as your home stands.
