Providence is the capital of Rhode Island and although it is the smallest state it historically was one of the first states to gain its independence. This independent attitude continues on in the overall attitude of this city. The three schools that will be discussed here are Providence College, Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design.

Providence College is the only school in the nation that is run by the Dominican Friars, a Catholic religious order. This doesn’t imply that you have to be Catholic to attend here it is just the history of the school that has continued on . Because of the high importance of spirituality on campus, the college highly encourages service to others by having all of the students to perform community service. Brown University is one of the most prestigious Ivy League schools in the country located right in Providence. It has just under 6000 undergraduate students, 1500 graduate and 340 in the medical school. This school was started as the only school at the time that welcomed students of all religions. In the late 1960′s it created the unique curriculum that it still uses today where the students design their own curriculum choosing the courses they want to take. The students at Brown are referred to as innovative, creative and intellectually restless and liberal arts centered curriculum works well for them. The last school in Providence is known as RISD which is short for the Rhode Island School of Design. It was started in 1877 for artists and designers and currently has 2200 students. The education here is thought to be a holistic one that balances professional majors in the arts with a liberal arts curriculum with literature, social sciences and humanities. RISD students are encouraged to be environmentally aware when they create their art or pieces of work as that is a large aspect of the school. For many artistic students, RISD is the ultimate art school to go to and blends in well with the more liberal city of Providence.

All of these schools are very different from each another and if you reside in Providence and want to stay there, there is absolutely a school for everyone here. Providence is in an ideal location on the East Coast close to all kinds of things that are in close proximity to this unique little city making it a great place to live.
