Moving: The Cost

November 11, 2009

Moving houses. This is an issue that can cost you a lot more than you would have ever imagined if not done carefully and sometimes even if done carefully. This text will be focused on all the expenses connected with moving houses, so that you will know better what to anticipate, whether you are moving using your own resources, or hiring a professional company. So what’s the problem you might ask? In short, there are basically two issues: when moving on your own, people sometimes underestimate the price of additional tools, packaging material, transportation or even the real value of the time they spend moving. Likewise in case of moving with the help of a professional company, you might come across problems related to wrong company choice, wrong price calculation, or undervaluation of all kinds of additional expenses that are necessary, but weren’t included in the company’s bill. Basically, you have three main options how to realize your relocation, as described in the first text of our series. What you have to consider is how much work you want or able to do yourself: all the packing, loading, transporting and unloading can either be done by the professionals, or by yourself. Or the gold mean is to find a company offering a kind of a hybrid service. This is useful if you feel you like to have more control over the whole process. The level of service provided may also vary: sometimes only the transportation is provided, in other cases you can also order loading, unloading and transport of things you have already packed.

What’s involved? Before starting this complicated operation, always sit down and plan a budget. It will save you lots of trouble later. We can divide the expenses connected to moving into four main categories: the transportation of your stuff, packing of your stuff, transportation of you and your family, and also the expenses related to starting up in your new home. The actual relocation. Firstly, the main price of moving your stuff has to be calculated. So will you be moving on your own, or hiring a company? This is the crucial issue you have probably already decided. In case you chose professional help (more on how to pick a mover company in one of the following articles), have a written estimate of the price from them. It should say clearly whether the offered price is binding or not, that means whether it is the final price, or there may be other charges coming up. Include the price of tips – it’s commonly around $25 per worker.

How much is the labor?. Secondly, calculate the price of the labor for packing and loading. It may be hired professionals or friends and family (in this case, at least pay them by buying a dinner!). In case you need to take some time off work for the moving, calculate the cost of this too. Also don’t forget to calculate the price of any essential packaging material (boxes, bubble wrap, tapes etc.) and/or tools (i.e. dollies).

How much is the transport?. Thirdly, think about how much the transportation for you and your family will be – find out the prices of flights, train or bus rides, or calculate the petrol price, if you want to travel by car. Also add the price of any accommodation, meals or entertainment you are planning to enjoy on your way to the new place.

The time after the move: back to square one Finally, moving from one home to another creates a lot of problems and additional expenses most people don’t even think of when cluttered up with all the boxes. A cable or telephone or other services sometimes involve some start-up charges for the initial connection. Another issue is groceries: you most likely emptied the fridge and freezer – both of these will have to get filled up again. Also you might need to purchase some items you have left behind – for example some household equipment. Or you may want to redecorate your new home first. It is always useful to think first and jot down the prices of all the necessary items to buy, so that the total sum doesn’t shock you after the moving.

As a Vancouver realtor, I have always tried to help my clients even with this issue, therefore I would like to share with you some useful tips & tricks: 1) Always think of the cost of moving something and compare it to the cost of a new item. The outcome of this comparison might shock you. 2) You might get a chance to get a relocation package from your new employer, if you are moving because of a new job. 3) For tax deduction possibility, make sure that you keep all the bills connected to the moving.
