Bed Linen And Fresh Flowers: A Beginners Guide To Interior Design

November 7, 2009

Designing the rooms in your house requires time and energy. If you haven’t decorated a house before, below are some hints to take into consideration before you start. Here are the basics to help get you on your way.

1) Primarily, you need to consider the personalities of everyone living in the house. Create designs you really like if you are living by yourself. If you and your flatmate or partner has varying preferences, this can cause problems. You need to be prepared to negotiate when it comes to the design.

2) To get a good idea of themes and colours that you like, have a look in magazines and interior design journals. This really gives you the visual you need to think with when it will come to designing your own rooms, as it can be intimidating staring at those blank white walls trying to figure out what you are going to do in there.

3) The colours in a room can create atmosphere and tone so take your time when it comes to choosing your colour scheme. If you have a favourite colour, see if it will fit in with the theme you have chosen for your room. If you already have furniture or have some in mind, look carefully at the colours in them. You can draw upon some of the colours in fabrics you will use in the room. In bedrooms, your bed linen should suit the colours on the walls and act as a focus.

4) When you put your furniture pieces in the room, keep in mind the flow of the space you are in. Unless the room you are decorating is huge, you do not want it to look any smaller. Play around with the positioning until it feels right to you.

5) Accent pieces go a long way in finishing up the look of a room. Plants and fresh cut flowers are great to put into any room. They keep the room alive instead of an empty space when you are not in them. Don’t be afraid to make your room look lived in, adding personal touches will make you feel more comfortable at home.

Don’t let decorating stress you out. Experiment with colours, furniture and accessories, make it fun and don’t get frustrated if it takes you a while to get it right.
