Essential Tips To Save Money On Your Central Heating Bills
October 31, 2009
With energy costs higher than they have ever been in recent history, it pays to find ways to reduce your central heating costs. Here are some essential tips for cutting down those central heating costs that eat into your wages each month. No matter what changes you decide to make, just bear in mind that the small ones can have a large impact on the overall costs, so it is well worth considering all possible improvements outlined below.
1. The best way to start saving money is to find your boiler and check that the hot water thermostat isn’t turned up too high. In most cases it is recommended not to go below 120 degrees.
2. Its something that many people neglect, but in addition to changing the temperature, you should also clean out the filters of your boiler to make sure that nothing is preventing it from working properly. A dirty and clogged filter will force your unit to work much harder and stay on longer as it struggles to penetrate anything through the central heating system.
3. Check your air ducts for gaps, leaks or disconnects. In fact, any leaks could be making your energy bills much higher than they need to be, and the worst part is that you’re not actually benefiting from getting any more heat for the costly price of your bills! Don’t worry about playing around with the appliance yourself, as that’s what the central heating experts are there for – call them up and they will send an engineer round. While the engineer is at your home, ask him to check the ducts too to make sure your system is running as efficiently as possible.
4. Adjust your thermostat a few degrees lower. Trust in me when I say this really does add up. When the bill comes through you will be glad you did this.
5. If you suspect that your thermostat isn’t the most modern on the market, make sure you speak to someone about getting a new one which is programmable. The reason is, you can set the thermostat so the temperature setting in your house is lower at night than during the day, when you are awake. Also, if you are away at work during the day, you can set it for a lower temperature and have it programmed to start heating the house a little bit before you come home. These aren’t too expensive and are easy to install and configure yourself.
Your central heating bills could be slashed in half if you follow the advice herein. You can get most of them done in just one day, but the payoff will last for as long as you live there! Now is the time to get stuck in – or decide if you need to call the engineer out, just to lend a hand.
